Last year, our friends at REI started a movement by choosing to #OptOutside during Black Friday. This year, they asked fellow businesses and partners a simple question: “Will you go outside with me?” We responded with a resounding, “Y-E-S!” To us, #OptOutside means to go any place without a ceiling, rain or shine, weekday or holiday. We believe the core values of #OptOutside can be applied year-round. So to do our part, we put together a series of weekly challenges that encouraged folks to spend more time outside, leading up to Black Friday!
The challenged culminated in a guided hike for our local fans here in Portland with KEEN Ambassador Adam Sawyer. A seasoned writer, photographer, Pacific Northwest hiking expert, and a Professional Gentleman of Leisure. Adam has written guidebooks, like Hiking Waterfalls in Oregon and the Best Outdoor Adventures Near Portland, highlighting the splendor of the Northwest and encouraging folks to get outside. Basically, he was the perfect person to call upon to lead a 2-mile, family-friendly hike in Forest Park, which borders downtown Portland and serves as backdrop for KEEN HQ. It’s one of the country’s largest urban forest reserves and also sometimes serves as our “photo studio” for some product photography you see on our website.
After what must’ve been one of the rainiest Thanksgivings we’ve had in Portland, we met at the Lower MaCleay Park Trailhead on Friday morning. We set up hot cocoa and snacks, and all breathed a collective sigh of relief as the rain cleared up and people began to arrive—34 in total! We wanted to keep this hike easy, accessible for all ages and a good starting point for those who hadn’t explored yet this area before. We took the break in rain as a sign that this hike was meant to be! We hiked along at a comfortable pace and were lucky enough to have Adam share his expertise on the area and its many trails.
Many thanks to everyone who attended, and be on the lookout for our next guided hike!
